High Speed Plasma Flow Research


The use of plasma to influence aerodynamic flows is a rapidly evolving field of study.  In particular, the generation of a plasma through the use of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) actuator has significant potential due to the ease with which the plasma is generated.  Research has shown that these DBD actuators can induce small flow velocities close to a surface which can be used to manipulate the wider flowfield.  For aerospace applications this can have a wide variety of uses and thus we are studying both the underlying mechanisms and their potential use in our airbreathing rocket designs.
